Ninety Minutes Of Waiting For Something To Happen

Every four years, the world collectively loses its mind over soccer. Intelligent adults paint their faces, wave flags, and insist that a sport where a single goal is considered an offensive explosion is somehow the pinnacle of athletic competition.
Let’s be honest. Soccer is the only game where you can invest an hour and a half of your life only to be rewarded with a thrilling… 0-0 tie. Imagine buying concert tickets only for the band to spend ninety minutes tuning their instruments before everyone applauds and goes home?
That’s soccer.
The field is roughly the size of Wyoming, yet twenty-two world-class athletes spend most of the match passing the ball sideways, backwards, or directly to the other team. The announcers scream as though history is unfolding because someone completed a twelve-foot pass.
Then there’s the flopping. Soccer players have elevated theatrical performance to an Olympic event. A gentle brush on the shoulder sends a 180-pound professional athlete tumbling across the grass as if he’d been hit by a freight train. Five seconds later, after receiving the miraculous healing powers of a trainer waving a water bottle nearby, he’s sprinting at full speed again. Broadway should recruit directly from the Premier League. Tony’s for everyone!

The clock is another masterpiece of confusion. It counts up instead of down, then the referee casually invents “stoppage time” like a professor adding extra questions after the exam has ended. Nobody really knows how much time remains except one person wearing a whistle, and everyone just accepts this.

Scoring itself is surprisingly optional. Players perform corner kicks and throw-ins with flair, pausing and marveling at the curve they put on the ball instead of trying to put it in the net. Teams can dominate possession for eighty-nine minutes, launch twenty-seven shots, and still lose because one guy accidentally sneezed near the penalty box. Then entire tournaments are decided by penalty kicks, reducing months of competition to grown men covering their groins for what is essentially a high-pressure carnival game.

Fans don't care as long as there is pleanty of beer at the concessions. Between sips, they will insist it’s all about strategy, patience, and subtle brilliance. What? But from the perspective of the casual observer, it often resembles watching people desperately fail to assemble IKEA furniture using only their feet.
Of course, millions will passionately defend the sport, claiming outsiders simply don’t understand its beauty. But if your game requires a thirty-minute explanation before newcomers can appreciate why absolutely nothing happened for eighty-five minutes, perhaps the game isn’t quite as universally captivating as advertised.
Here are some ideas: a penalty box like hockey, rolling substitutions, narrower field, 2-point goal for shots over 30 yards and 30 minute halves... no extra time...PLEASE!
Just sayin’.
College Football starts in just 3 weeks.
Thank God.
