A cigar born from adversity

When a devastating fire tore through AJ Fernandez’s flagship factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, in 2025, millions of cigars were lost and a significant portion of the operation was damaged.
Rather than simply rebuild, Abdel “AJ” Fernandez chose to create something meaningful from the experience. The result is Amar, one of the most anticipated cigar releases of 2026. It’s a blend that serves as both a thank-you note to the cigar community and a reflection of resilience, gratitude, and heritage.
The name itself carries dual significance. In Spanish, amar means “to love.” In Arabic, it translates to “moon.” The combination reflects Fernandez’s Cuban and Lebanese roots while symbolizing reflection and renewal following a difficult chapter.
Amar is a true Nicaraguan puro, crafted entirely from Nicaraguan tobaccos and finished with a proprietary Nicaraguan Habano wrapper. Production takes place at AJ’s renowned San Lotano factory, where the company continued operations while rebuilding after the fire.
The cigar falls squarely into the medium-to-full-bodied category. Amar focuses on balance and complexity and is quite extraordinary for a $10.00 retail stick.
Initial reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. It has a flawless burn, rich flavor progression through the first 2/3 and is not your typical AJ/heavier style. Notes of citrus, roasted nuts, vanilla cream, coffee, mineral-rich earth, and subtle spice have been enjoyed. It delivers sophistication, balance, and evolution, all qualities that seasoned smokers often appreciate more than sheer power.
For fans of AJ Fernandez, Amar may not be the strongest cigar he has ever made, but it may be one of his most meaningful. And in a market crowded with new releases, that makes it worth seeking out.
