1. Your workshop has become one of Italy’s most respected shirtmakers. How did it all begin?
Roberta: My mother, Carmen, opened the shop in 1975 after years of working as a shirtmaker. Those first years were not easy. Today we talk about fast fashion, but back then it didn’t even exist. Turin was home to many artisan shirtmakers, competition was strong, and my mother had no way of knowing whether customers would come. Little by little, they did. And it was those first satisfied clients who became our greatest ambassadors, telling friends, relatives and colleagues about our work. One customer brought another, then another, and word of mouth did the rest. There was no internet, and for a small artisan workshop, that was the only real form of advertising. She wanted the freedom to create shirts her own way, without compromise. We started in a tiny 15-square-metre shop, and through word of mouth, careful craftsmanship, and loyal clients, we've grown while never losing our original values.
2. Why remain committed to handmade shirts in an era of mass production?
Carmen: True craftsmanship can't be rushed. Every shirt is cut and made from an individual paper pattern and finished by hand, so there are natural limits to what we can produce. We'd rather make fewer shirts exceptionally well than chase volume.
3. What should someone feel the first time they wear one of your shirts?
Carmen: Comfort above all else. A bespoke shirt should move naturally with the body and make the wearer feel confident. That begins by listening to how they live, work, and dress before recommending the right fabric and cut for them. When it comes to design features, we listen carefully to the customer, whether it’s the color if thread, a monogram or even a detail allowing the watch to be exposed.
4. What separates an exceptional shirt from a merely good one?
Carmen: It's the harmony of hundreds of details such as custom patterns, exceptional fabrics, unfused collars, hand-sewn buttonholes, precise stitching, and thoughtful construction. Most of these details are invisible, but they're exactly what make a shirt personal and last for decades.
5. How do you define true luxury?
Carmen: Luxury isn't about price. It's about having the time to slow down, choose every detail, and own something made specifically for you. Real luxury is choosing quality over quantity and creating something that's meant to last a lifetime. We believe every time you put on one of our shirts, you smile at the experience and the feel of it.
6. What has it meant to pass the workshop to your daughter, Roberta?
Carmen: I never expected Roberta to leave a successful advertising career to continue our family business. Seeing her embrace this craft has been one of the greatest joys of my life, and it gives me confidence that our philosophy will continue into the future.
7. Roberta, what has working alongside your mother taught you?
Roberta: Our personalities are very different, she's practical while I'm creative, but those differences have made us stronger. More than technique, she taught me dedication, patience, and that building something meaningful requires sacrifice, consistency, and passion. I am always learning.
8. Is there one client who perfectly represents your philosophy?
Roberta: A client from an aristocratic family asked us to embroider his family crest inside the shirt but requested no maker's label. He wanted the shirt to reflect him, not us. That perfectly captures our philosophy: the garment should celebrate the client, not the maker. That is what true custom is all about.
9. What never goes out of style in a great shirt?
Roberta: Quality. Exceptional fabric, thoughtful construction, and timeless proportions never become outdated. I believe a well-made shirt is always contemporary. It has the ability to make the person wearing it feel instantly more elegant and can adapt naturally to almost any occasion because it isn’t defined by fashion. From a craftsmanship perspective, there are certain things that, to me, will never go out of style.
A proper collar should be made without fused interlinings, using floating interlinings instead, so that it retains its shape over time while remaining soft, natural and easy to press. The seams should be clean, precise and sewn with single-needle construction rather than double-needle stitching. And then there’s the fabric: a truly exceptional cotton reveals its quality over the years, retaining both its beauty and its comfort even after countless wears.
The greatest compliment is when a client returns decades later asking us to repair a beloved shirt rather than replace it. We do this often. Maybe a new collar or cuff, we always love that.
10. Fifty years from now, what do you hope people say about Camiceria Artigiana?
Roberta: I hope they'll say we remained true to our craft. I hope people will say that we worked with honesty, consistency and respect for our craft. And if, fifty years from now, someone finds one of our shirts and decides it’s worth repairing rather than replacing, then I’ll know we did our job well. That's the legacy every artisan hopes to leave.
