G'Day Mate. The 39MM Outback Songline

Furlan Marri Editions are collaborative retailer editions, created with a select group of boutiques around the world. The idea is simple: make something that belongs unmistakably to both sides of the partnership. Because slapping a retailer’s logo on the dial and calling it a collaboration would be, frankly, a bit lazy.

Outback Songlines is the latest chapter in that series, created exclusively with Time + Tide. It will launch online first, with an exclusive 48-hour window, before becoming available across Time + Tide’s boutiques. The relationship with Time + Tide has evolved into considerably more than the usual retailer-brand arrangement. Over the years, the two have built a genuine creative partnership around a shared belief that watchmaking should be driven by passion, storytelling and, most importantly, community.

The Outback Songlines

The Outback Songlines is the second Furlan Marri Edition created with Time + Tide, building on a partnership shaped by shared ideas, mutual trust and a mutual enthusiasm for independent watchmaking. In other words, the first one went well enough to justify doing it again. Happily, the second one is rather good.

The starting point for Outback Songlines is the Australian Outback, an environment where navigation historically required considerably more imagination than simply opening Google Maps. For millennia, Aboriginal peoples traversed enormous territories without conventional maps or navigational instruments. Instead, knowledge of the landscape was encoded in Songlines: sequences of melodies and chants that describe the terrain and identify waterholes, shelters, resources and other important landmarks.

Sung in the correct sequence, these songs could guide people across vast distances, allowing them to retrace routes and reach essential resources without losing their way.

It is an extraordinary system of navigation, memory and cultural transmission, and the inspiration for the watch’s warm, earthy dial, accented with rose-gold details. The colors evoke the arid landscapes of the Outback, while the concept reaches far beyond aesthetics.

Oy, that’s a lot of bull-shit to describe a collaboration, but you get the idea.

The Outback Songlines is also a more substantial 39mm, seemingly the sweet spot of recent watch sizes. The design takes its cues from pocket watches of the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly those used by hunters, equestrians and military officers who valued durability and legibility. Hunter-case pocket watches protected their crystals with hinged covers; the concept was later adapted into wristwatches, particularly for military use.

The Hunter Caseback

Here, Furlan Marri gives the idea a thoroughly modern treatment. The 39mm stainless-steel case combines polished and brushed surfaces, creating the kind of contrast that makes you appreciate just how much work goes into something that, from a distance, looks deceptively simple. The double caseback adds protection without turning the watch into a tank, while 100 metres of water resistance means it is perfectly capable of surviving something more demanding than a desk drawer.

And then there is the good stuff.

A discreet notch on the side allows the hinged caseback to be opened, revealing a special Time + Tide engraving and a sapphire crystal through which you can admire the rose-gold-plated oscillating weight. That rose-gold rotor was first introduced on the Red Hunter, so its return here is a nice bit of continuity between the two editions.

Because apparently even a caseback deserves a sequel. Ok…we will go with that.

The specifications are equally serious and loaded with high end quality.

The G100 offers a 68-hour power reserve and is regulated to an accuracy of approximately ±7 seconds per day. Finishing follows the same elevated standard seen in the Cornes de Vache, including Geneva stripes, snailing, blued-steel screws and the engraved Furlan Marri signature: Furlan Marri, crafted with care, designed for details.
